Storytime: Rummy Mummy Horchata

Mummies & horchata…. what’s the connection?

It’s their North African connection! Horchata is often affiliated with Mexican cuisine, but that’s an abridged version of its story. This beverage dates back to ancient times when it was referred to as “hordeata” by the Romans after they conquered Egypt. The Moor peoples of North Africa spread the popularity of the beverage throughout the region, eventually reaching Spain. Until this point, horchata was typically made with tiger nuts. Because Spanish conquistadors in the Americas didn’t bring tiger nuts, they used rice to make the drink that eventually became very popular in Mexico and beyond. Even today, horchata is not a singular specific beverage. They continue to be made with a variety of nuts, grains and spices, and we embrace its diversity, flexibility and versatility when we make it here at Bondhu!
